No Longer an Engineer

Welp, it’s official. I would have held on for longer, to make sure I had a better savings cushion, but here we are. Today is my first official day having left the regular 9-5 world. I can’t say I miss it. I laughed when they fired me, and all day afterward on and off, because the fact that it’s not my timetable is kind of funny, as is the fact that I ruined a manager’s day by not being upset—poor guy. He was going to really savor my distress and his punishment of me for being uppity, and here I was laughing.

Expect the spirits to do as they do with complete disregard for your plans. And baybeeeee…. expect me to do the same.

I’m sitting here at my computer in what can only be described as a state of delight. I am free. Free to wear unacceptable clothing, have unacceptable opinions (and comment on it.) Free to pick my own hours, but more importantly free to stop pretending to be something I’m not. I am 100% a well educated, and frankly ingeniously talented engineer, but what I am not is a 9-5 person. Unfortunately, if you are an engineer, you’re going to get stuck with a 9-5 environment because most engineers would sacrifice their entire life for routine.

Holding in the comments was giving me a touch of heartburn on the regular. If you’re reading this and you worked with me, you only heard 20% or less of what I wanted to say.

I am deeply amused by the fact that I’m a “non-person” by the measures of my previous life. I am content with that, content to leave all the back breaking work of trying to be someone I am not behind. I am actually relieved to leave the world of insurance, 401k, and all the paperwork that goes with it.

For the first time in my adult life, I am only responsible for myself and doing what I think I need to do. As a result, I’m doing a bit of celebratory day drinking. I am free to misbehave as hard as I feel like I need to.

Pour one out for me wherever you are. I belong to the spirits full time and I have left normalcy behind.
