Experiences and Gratitude

I had the opportunity to visit another house last weekend. I’m very grateful for it. The event was beautifully decorated, the mambo who is our host was a lovely person, and I love a chance to experience Haitian culture. I got to practice my Konpa with someone who forgave me for being a bit clumsy.

One of things I walked out of the experience with was a deep appreciation for the spirits and the fact that this is the house I landed in. Every house does it slightly differently, depending on what people need and where the divine is meeting them. I found myself watching the way other houses—the event was full of other societies/vodou houses—interact with each other and with other societies.

The spirit is good to put us where we prosper best. I am exactly, exactly where I should be. I felt so lucky, so grateful to be sitting at a table of my peers, my sisters and brothers.

Comparison is the thief of joy, so I feel like I need to say this.

I have no judgements on what anyone else is doing. I have no doubt they’re doing what they need to. I have no need to say what they’re doing is right or wrong, because I know this life is the classroom of the spirit, and the spirit is real damn good at teaching us how we need to be taught.

Judgement and comparison is always a waste of time.

I will say this: I continue to be impressed at the capacity of the spirit to match us with what we need. I am proud of us at Societe Gade Nou Leve—in English, the society name is “watch us rise.”

Reader, we came, we saw, we shared. We shone bright with the love of the divine.
